Feed post pinning

Updated 2 days ago

Overview

App managers and users who can manage the home feed or a site feed can now pin important posts to the top of a feed, so they don't get lost in the timeline. You can pin posts on the home feed, site feeds, and the shared content feed. A pinned post stays pinned only on the feed where it was posted. Each feed can have up to 3 pinned posts, which employees see in a Pinned posts block at the top of the feed. Pins last 3 days by default, or you can choose 7 days or set a custom end time of up to 15 days.

What pinning does

A pin moves that post to the top of its own feed, inside a Pinned posts block, so people do not have to scroll to find it. While it is pinned, it is shown only there. The same post is not shown again further down the timeline.

The pin goes up when the manager confirms it. How long it stays up is chosen in the dialog: 3 days, 7 days, or a custom end date and time up to 15 days ahead. When that time is reached, or an app manager unpins the post, it leaves the block and returns to its normal place in the timeline.

A pin does not move the post to a different feed. On its own feed, it is shown once, at the top, until the pin ends.

Which feed the pin belongs to

Home, & site feeds have their own pin list. A pin on one list never shows up on another.

The post lives on

What the dialog says

Home Feed

Home Feed only

Top of the home feed. Button: Pin to home feed.

A site feed

That site’s feed only

Top of the site feed. Button: Pin to site feed.

A shared content feed (a shared page, event, album, or link)

Home or Site Feed

The of  Home or site feed wherever its shared

An app manager/ User who can manage feed can start the action from whichever feed they are looking at. The pin still lands on the post’s own feed. Pinning a site post while viewing Home puts it on that site feed, not on Home.

A site post. The site name is in the message, even if the manager opened the menu from another feed.

After a successful pin, a short confirmation names the same feed.

3. Who can pin and who can only read

App managers/ ACG managers or admins for Manage Home Feed/ Feature owners

  • See Pin to Feed on a post

  • Choose how long the pin lasts

  • See Unpin from Feed once it is pinned

  • Use the unpin icon on the pinned card (tooltip: Unpin)

Everyone else

  • See the Pinned posts block at the top of the feed

  • Open Show more or View full post to read the post

  • Cannot pin or unpin

People still only see posts they are allowed to see. A restricted post does not appear in someone else’s pinned block.

4. Which posts can be pinned

Can be pinned

Cannot be pinned

  • A normal home feed post

  • A shared feed post (a reshare of another feed post)

  • Shared content shown as a feed post: a page, event, album

  • Questions

  • Polls, forms, and recognition

  • Social campaigns

  • Comments and replies on content

If Pin to Feed is missing, the person is not having a privilege to pin that post.

5. How to pin a post

  • Open the feed that contains the post. Home, a site, or a shared content feed all work. The pin still goes to the post’s own feed.

  • Open the post’s overflow menu (the ⋯ on the post).

  • Choose Pin to Feed.

  • In Pin post, choose how long it should stay pinned. 3 days is already selected.

  • Choose Pin to feed

Before the post is pinned, the menu includes Pin to Feed. This item is for app managers.

The Pin post dialog. 3 days is the default. The intro says pinned posts stay at the top of the feed for all users.

Cancel closes the dialog and does not pin the post. The pin starts when the manager confirms, not at a later time.

How long a pin lasts

Choice

What it means

3 days

Default. The pin ends three days from now.

7 days

The pin ends seven days from now.

Custom

The manager sets an End date and an End time. Both are required. The longest custom pin is 15 days from now.

KB5.pngKB6.png

Custom asks for an end date and an end time. The pin still starts now. If the end date and time are more than 15 days away, the dialog shows: Post cannot be pinned for more than 15 days

There is no “until I unpin it” option. Every pin has an end. A manager can unpin sooner.

What everyone sees

Pinned posts sit at the top of that feed, above the regular timeline. The block is labeled Pinned posts and uses the organization’s brand color so it stands apart from other posts.

One pinned post

The block shows a short preview: author, time, and the start of the message. View full post opens the rest.

One pinned post. The preview is shortened. View full post opens the whole post.

Two or three pinned posts

They share one Pinned posts header and stack inside the same block. The newest pin is first. Each card has its own View full post link. Show more is on the block header.  A shared page or other shared content keeps its title and summary inside the card.

KB8.pngKB9.png

Up to three pinned posts in one block. Newest pin is at the top. The middle card is a shared content post.

The three-post limit

Each feed can have 3 pinned posts at a time. Home, every site, and every shared content feed count separately. A site can be full while Home still has room.

A fourth pin on the same feed is blocked. The manager sees:

You already have 3 posts pinned to the feed. Unpin a post to add more posts

The feed is already at three pins. Unpin one on that same feed, then pin the new post.

KB10.png

Unpinning a post on the Marketing site does not free a slot on Home. Check the feed named in the dialog.

How to unpin

Unpinning removes the post from the Pinned posts block right away. The post stays in the timeline. Other feeds are not affected.

An app manager can unpin in either of these ways:

  • Open the post menu and choose Unpin from Feed. Pin to Feed is replaced by this item while the post is pinned.

  • On the pinned card, use the unpin icon. The tooltip says Unpin.

Once the post is pinned, the menu shows Unpin from Feed.

KB11.png

Hovering the unpin icon on the pinned card shows Unpin.

KB12.png

There is no second confirmation dialog. The post leaves the block as soon as the manager unpins it. If the pin simply reaches its end date and time, it leaves the block the same way, without someone having to unpin it.

FAQ

Q: I pinned a site post from Home. Why is it not at the top of Home?

Ans: The pin follows the post. A site post is pinned on that site’s feed. Open the site to see it in Pinned posts. The confirmation message names the site.

Q: Why can’t I pin this question, poll, or recognition?

Ans: Those cards are not pin-eligible. Pin a normal post, a shared feed post, or shared content (a page, event, album).

Q: Can I pin something until I take it down, with no end date?

Ans: No. Choose 3 days, 7 days, or a custom end date and time within 15 days. Unpin earlier if it should come down sooner.

Q: The custom date is rejected. What is wrong?

Ans: The end is more than 15 days from now. The dialog says Post cannot be pinned for more than 15 days. Pick an earlier end date and time.

Q: I already pinned three posts and need a fourth.

Ans: That feed is full. Unpin one post on the same feed, then pin the new one. Another site’s pins do not count toward this limit.

Q: Does unpinning delete the post?

Ans: No. Unpinning only removes the spotlight. Edit and Delete are separate menu items.

Q: Will employees see a different block than app managers?

Ans: Everyone sees the same Pinned posts block: the header, the previews, Show more, and View full post. Pin and unpin are manager actions.

Q: A reader says a pinned post is missing.

Ans: Check three things. Are they looking at the post’s own feed? Has the pin expired? Are they allowed to see that post? A restricted post stays hidden from people who cannot open it.
