ABAC: Add manual audiences with standard or custom attributes

Updated 5 months ago

Overview

An audience can be created using attributes mapping over from your integrated people data (e.g. Workday, Okta, Entra, etc.). This article provides step-by-step instructions on how you can create a manual audience in Simpplr One.

Who is this for: App managers, Audience managers

When to use the manual method

There are multiple ways to create audiences as described in Creating audience categories and audiences. Audiences are customizable groups of users based on attributes like role, location, or specific individuals. They can then be used to manage who has access to specific features and content.

This method provides precise control over audience membership using logical conditions (AND/OR) and offers flexibility to accommodate variations in user information.

The manual method is recommended when:

  • You want to create dynamic audiences based on multiple people data fields
  • You need fine-grained control over audience membership.
  • You want to combine multiple attributes with AND/OR conditions for precise targeting.
  • You want flexibility to match people attribute values that may have variations in wording or format.

Create a manual audience

To create an audience using attributes, follow these steps:

Steps to create a manual audience

  1. Go to Manage > Audiences.
  2. Click the downward arrow next to Create.
  3. Click Create audience.
  4. Name your audience.
  5. Add a description.
  6. Select parent (Audience category folder)
  7. Add conditions for your audience.
  8. Verify the audience members count at the bottom and click on the (...) to verify the complete user list.
  9. Click Create

Audience rules, operators, and groups

Audience rules, operators, and groups help you define your audience clearly based on a series of selected attributes and conditions.

Audience rule

An audience rule is: a single condition based on an attribute. You can create multiple rules to define the audience more precisely.

For example, the audience rules for each selection below include exactly one rule type (Department, Role, Country):

  • Department IS Sales

  • Role STARTS WITH "Manager"

  • Country CONTAINS "United"

Audience operator

An audience operator is how a rule is applied to an attribute. Examples include:

  • IS / IS NOT → Exact match or exclusion
  • CONTAINS → Matches partial text
  • STARTS WITH → Matches text at the beginning
  • ENDS WITH→ Matches text at the end

Audience Groups

A group is a combination of one or more rules, connected by either AND or OR.

  • Within a group, all rules follow the same operator logic (AND/OR).
  • If you want to use different operators (e.g., some rules with AND, others with OR), you create separate groups.

Example audience using rules, operators, and Groups

Creating audiences in Simpplr is really easy. For those of you who love to know the nitty-gritty details, here is how rules, operators, groups, and attributes work together to bring you your target audience in a few clicks.

  • Green = Rule
  • Purple = Operator
  • Red = Group
  • Grey = Attributes

Use case: All Managers in US and Canada

Is manager True

And

Country Is Canada, United States, USA, US

Audience types you can select for rules

If you have segments enabled, you will see a ‘Segment’ rule type. If you have custom fields mapping over to Simpplr, then you will see a “Custom field’ rule type. If you have ‘Microsoft Entra groups’ or ‘Okta groups’ enabled, then you will see a ‘Group’ type.
