Overview
Audience Based Access Control (ABAC) provides the flexibility to enable highly targeted content, communications and access controls.
In this article, we provide an overview on how you can send a must read in a way that utilizes ABAC to restrict that must read to a specific audience. This capability empowers content creators to control content reads and notifications by assigning relevant audiences.
Who is this for: App managers, site owners, site managers, site content managers
Note:
Creating a restricted must read for content does not restrict the content itself. It only restricts who will be required to mark that content as “read.” Similarly, if the content itself is restricted, the must read will only be restricted to the predefined restricted audience for the content.

Must read content definition and usage
What does it mean to mark content as must read?
Important content can be marked as must read, requiring users to confirm that they have read it. Making content must read is an easy way to help ensure the message you're communicating is received by users. When you mark your content as must read, your users will receive a weekly reminder email every Monday (or immediately if you choose) to help encourage them to read and acknowledge the content you made.
Can durations be set for a must read?
You can set your must read duration to 90 days or indefinitely.
What is content?

Restricting your must read audience will ensure that only the necessary audiences are required to view the content, and must mark it as read.

- Similarly, if the content itself is restricted, the must read will only be restricted to the predefined restricted audience for the content.
For example, if you would like to publish an updated engineering safety page to the Engineering site and want to ensure that all of your Engineering employees have reviewed it, you might restrict the must read audience only to your Engineering employees, but anyone with access to the Engineering site still has access to the page.
Who can restrict a must read?
Site owners, site managers, site content managers, and Feature owner/Admin/Managers of the Manage site ACG of each site that's been granted must read privileges can make content must read with restricted audiences.
Best practices, recommendations, and pro tips
- When selecting your preferred must read audience:
- If you would like to target a smaller audience within your pre-existing audience, select the + button. Then, you may add a group or rule to create a sub audience on the fly!
- Once within the sub audience selection, if you click the number indicating how many people are within your audience, you can see the list of users within that audience.
- After making your audience selection:
- You may double check the list of users who will be required to review the content by clicking the 3 dots to the right of your user’s images.
Must read notifications
If a must read tag is restricted, notification would only be sent only to the users who are a part of the restricted audience as well as requirement to mark the content as read.
